About Me
Hi, my name is Viv Rathfon and I am a Queer, Asian American visual artist who is currently pursuing a BFA in Communication Arts at VCU. While the subjects of my work vary widely, my mediums of preference are primarily watercolor and digital.
I believe in storytelling through my personal, intersectional lens. I also believe storytelling is the first and most overlooked step in changing the future for the better. I often feel something missing from stories about dystopia, societal imbalance, or injustice and connect that to our present society. While I believe it is important to tell these stories as a catalyst for critical thinking, I want to push back against the often pessimistic conclusions of modern dystopian narratives. What happens when the freedom fighters prevail; after oppressive systems are truly overthrown. When is the work of revolution done? What do we do when it is? Much of my work focuses on answering the question “what is utopia?” I answer this question not because I believe there is one definitive answer, but because I believe attempting to answer that question is a necessary step in actualizing a better future.
In addition to my passion for storytelling and its revolutionary capabilities, I love playing DnD, video games, and my two cats, Hugh and Maple.
